Abstract: The moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) is a novel wastewater treatment process that has been widely used for all kinds of wastewater treatment, and the carrier is one of the key factors influencing the efficiency of MBBR. The research and application progress of the carriers with different material properties, the common fillers and modified fillers of different configurations used in MBBR at home and abroad were mainly reviewed, and the microbial communities characteristics of biofilm attached on different kinds of carriers were analyzed. Finally, the future development trend of carriers was put forward and it was considered that the development of the economic and durable carriers with various pollutants removal efficiency were the future development direction.
